Fluorescent Brightner 28 is a colorless organic compound that fluoresces (clear bluish) under ultraviolet radiation. It is related structurally to Fluorescent Brightner 9 (Calcofluor White MR) which was used by Jefferies and Belcher and Maeda and Ischida in plant tissue studies.
Fluorescent Brightener 28 is used for the staining of fungi and as a viability stain. Industrial uses include use as a fluorescent brightening agent for cellulose and polyamide fabrics, paper and in detergents and soaps.
