Biochem Physiol Actions: MPST (mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase) gene encodes a protein that catalyzes the transfer of a sulfur ion from 3-mercaptopyruvate to cyanide or other thiol compounds. It is essential for thiosulfate biosynthesis and for detoxification of cyanide. It plays a key role in cysteine degradation. Deficiency of MPST causes a rare inheritable disorder called mercaptolactate-cysteine disulfiduria (MCDU), which is characterized by excessive amounts of the sulfur-containing amino acid and ß-mercaptolactate-cysteine disulfide in the urine. Mental retardation is also observed in some cases.
