Mode of action and Anti-microbial spectrum: Puromycin is a protein synthesis inhibitor that causes premature chain termination by acting as an analog of the 3′-terminal end of aminoacyl-tRNA. It prevents growth of bacteria, protozoa, algae, and mammalian cells. Acts very quickly and can kill 99% of cells within 2 days, the resistance gene (puromycin acetyltransferase) gives very effective protection.
Puromycin is soluble in water and is often used as a selective agent in molecular biology research.
