Amphotericin B is one of the earliest compounds designed to kill fungi. It acts by forming channels in fungal membranes, causing the cells to become leaky. It is, of course, toxic to eukaryotic cells in culture. Thus, very low doses are recommended.Typical concentrations in media range from 0.5 to 2.5 µg/mL. High concentrations of amphotericin B solution (FUNGIZONE) are not recommended for routine prophylactic use.
