11β-HSD1 catalyzes the conversion of inactive cortisone to active cortisol in adipose tissue. Over-expression of 11β-HSD1 results in visceral obesity and metabolic syndrome including insulin-resistant diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and hyperphagia.
